I’ve been blogging for over a year, and I have to be honest, it’s hard. There are many aspects of blogging that I was clueless to when I started this journey. Had I not enjoyed writing, I’m positive this would have been short lived. It’s time consuming.

I’m nowhere near being a successful blogger. Albeit, I do have a fundamental understanding of what it takes to be one. That my friend is hard work. It takes persistence, discipline, commitment, and a range of skill sets. Do you want to take your blogging game to the next level? Of course you do! Here’s a list of ESSENTIAL skills to be a successful blogger.

Patience

Many bloggers quit early on because they lacked the patience to wait for the results. I can recount to my early days of blogging. I had read about other bloggers who managed to attain prominence within their first 3 months. I thought..if they could do it, I could definitely do it to. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Although I followed the strategies these bloggers recommended, my results weren’t the same. I began to beat myself up for not working hard enough. While the truth of the matter was, I needed to be patient.

I didn’t see the results of my work until 5 months in my blogging journey. The hours spent on promotion, networking on Facebook, social media management and experimenting with multiple growth strategies took awhile to operate.

I didn’t get views overnight. I still struggle to grow on Instagram . I even had my Pinterest account suspended for reasons I wasn’t accountable for. I lost many followers as a result, and it took awhile to recover my account. There are many setbacks at the price of success. Sometimes it feels like there’s no progress even when you’re on the right track. But with a little patience and determination, it will happen.

Time Management

A lot of us head straight for our phones when we wake up. It’s easy to get caught up in checking emails, deleting spam, sending newsletters, and participating in networking groups. I’ve found that attempting to break that habit is hilariously unmanageable. Instead, I started timing how long I spent online. Whether it was for leisure or promotion, setting a timer on tasks makes it easier to manage my schedule.

Social Media Presence

Without a social media presence, it’d be nearly impossible to become a successful blogger. If you’re looking to take your blog to the next level, I’d advise focusing on two platforms. Many bloggers tend to recommend that you make an account on every social media. I don’t endorse that practice because one, it’s overwhelming. And two, starting with fewer platforms allows you to familiarize with the algorithms and develop growth strategies.

Networking

Networking is great for many reasons. You get to be a part of a community with like minded people. It allows you to learn from other bloggers, and it opens up opportunities for collaboration.

Web Design

To become a successful blogger, you must act the part. That means your blog should look somewhat professional. Visuals are vital when it comes to blogging success. You don’t have to dish out thousands of dollars for web designer. Just be willing to learn, and have an eye for detail.

Goal setting

Set realistic goals to achieve. I mentioned earlier that I thought I would be an influential blogger by the 3rd month in. Ha! I wasn’t even close. That may not be the case for you. Some bloggers do get success early on. But realistically, many don’t. It’s all trial and error. So start with small steps. Be consistent. There’s no need to rush the process. Join the slow blogging movement.

Passion

And finally, consider why you want to be a successful blogger. Are you looking for a different career path? Has it always been your dream to be a writer? Have you heard that blogging can become a good source of income?

You have to know why you want it. If it’s because you want to make money then reconsider. It takes awhile to make your first few dollars. Even if you blog consistently, it might take up to a year. That’s why it’s important to have passion. Because without it, you will head in the wrong direction.
